Bristol Healthcare Refurbishment: Transforming an Office into a Private Hospital

Delivering modern healthcare environments within existing buildings

Delivering modern healthcare environments within existing buildings requires technical expertise, careful coordination and a clear understanding of clinical requirements. At Koddis Construction, we recently completed the transformation of a two-storey office building in North Bristol into a high-specification private hospital for cosmetic surgery.

As a healthcare refurbishment contractor in Bristol, this project demonstrates how existing buildings across the South West can be successfully repurposed into high-performing clinical environments.

Starting from the Structural Shell

The project began with a full internal strip-out, taking the building back to its primary structure. Only the roof, external walls and stair core were retained.

This approach allowed for complete flexibility in redesigning the internal layout while maintaining the existing building envelope. Working within an existing structure required careful planning to ensure that new services could be integrated efficiently and safely.

Delivering a Modern Healthcare Environment

Converting an office building into a hospital involves far more than a standard refurbishment. The project required the installation of specialist systems to meet healthcare standards, including:

  • Advanced mechanical and ventilation systems
  • Medical gas infrastructure
  • High-performance airflow and extract systems
  • Clinical-grade finishes suitable for surgical procedures

As an experienced healthcare construction company operating across Bristol and the South West, Koddis Construction coordinated these elements to ensure compliance, performance and long-term reliability.

Overcoming Key Challenges

Working within an existing building presented several challenges.

The integration of complex building services within restricted ceiling voids required detailed coordination between design and installation teams. In addition, the project involved ongoing design development, requiring flexibility and clear communication to maintain progress on site.

Our team worked closely with consultants and specialist subcontractors to develop practical, buildable solutions while maintaining programme.

The Result: A High-Spec Private Hospital in Bristol

The completed facility provides a modern, high-quality private hospital in Bristol, designed to support both patient care and clinical efficiency.

Since opening, the hospital has:

  • Achieved a ‘Good’ CQC rating across all domains
  • Delivered consistent, high-quality care to the local community
  • Created a comfortable and efficient working environment for staff

Importantly, the building has performed well in operation, with no major quality issues reported.

A Project That Makes a Difference

Beyond construction, this project has had a meaningful impact. The facility now supports patients across the Bristol and South West region, providing specialist services while creating employment opportunities and a high-quality working environment for staff.

Why Healthcare Refurbishment Matters

This project highlights the growing importance of healthcare refurbishment and building conversion in the UK, particularly in cities like Bristol where existing buildings can be repurposed to meet modern clinical demands.

Rather than new-build developments, office-to-hospital conversions provide a sustainable and efficient way to deliver healthcare infrastructure.
